Field Trip Overview

It is the first time that our department had an educational tour. Gladly, we are the pioneering batch for the students of Institute of computing to have this field trip. We were so excited, we thought of having all just fun and just strolling to places and company visits but it was not just that. We almost forgot our purpose, the educational tour.

We departed for Manila last October 4, 2010 and checked in Garden Plaza Hotel, visited some companies namely, Bayantel, SSS, Hitachi and TTI we also visited UP Diliman, had our national seminar there and toured to the UP Ayala Land TechnoHub to visit IBM and SeaChange. For our fun and leisure time we went to People’s Park in the Sky of Tagaytay and then to Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna with a ride-all-you-can pass.

It was really a trip worth remembering, it was tiring but really a wonderful experience for all of us.

Day 1

Today, I went to a company visit to Bayantel, located at Quezon City. Bayantel is the mostly known name shortened form of the Bayan Telecommunications, Inc. Bayan Telecommunications, Inc. operates as a telecommunications company in Philippines. It offers various services, including local exchange carrier, international gateway facility, leased line, public trunk radio, and public calling office services primarily to corporate and residential customers in Metro Manila and Bicol, and Visayas and Mindanao regions. The company also provides data and communications services, such as frame relay services, Internet access, and other managed data services. Bayan Telecommunications, formerly known as International Communications Corporation, was founded in 1961, and is based in Quezon City, Philippines. Bayan Telecommunications, Inc. operates as a subsidiary of Bayan Telecommunications Holdings Corporation.

What I learned?

I learned about the IP performance to test, measure and their networks. Also, they said that even they have a fast connection they usually have an intermittent connection. Bayan Telecommunications' existing nationwide network is composed of satellite, terrestrial and land/submarine based cable facilities.

What I liked ?

I liked their line advertisement, “gaganda pa ang buhay sa bayan.” In this line, they encourage the Filipino people to like and love their products. With this, the speaker said that all products of bayantel are best and they find it easier to go global.

What I didn’t like?

In the first company visit, I don't like what the speaker told us. Some of his topics were not related to our course, Information Technology. Some of his topics are related to engineering students. But we have no choice, we have to listen what the speaker taught us.

Day 2

Today, I went to the University of the Philippines main campus in Diliman, Quezon City and to UP Ayala Land TechnoHub.

The first part of the seminar was a brief welcoming address by Prof. Lemuel Brana then followed by Ms Rose Ann Sale with her talk about on how to write a winning thesis.

The UP Ayala Land TechnoHub is an information and technology park or an economic zone for information and technology related business locators. It is located in Barangay UP Campus near Philcoa in Quezon City, along Commonwealth Avenue within the University of the Philippines property.

This technology park is a partnership between the University of the Philippines and Ayala Land - a subsidiary of Ayala Corporation, to utilize the idle property of the university. It is adjacent to the U.P. Arboretum, a forest and protected area near the Triangle Park. The techno hub is an off-shoot of the previous partnership between the university and the corporation through the Ayala IT Park which is located at the southern boundary of the university along Katipunan corner C.P. Garcia Avenue.

SeaChange International is the global leader in multi-screen video and one of the largest software companies worldwide. The Company provides innovative, Emmy award-winning solutions and services for back office, advertising, content, in-home devices and broadcast to hundreds of media companies globally, including blue chips such as Comcast, Virgin Media, AT&T, Hutchison Whampoa, Vodacom and DISH Network. Headquartered in Acton, Massachusetts, SeaChange has product development, support and sales offices around the world.

International Business Machines (IBM) is an American multinationalcomputer, technology and IT consulting corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York, United States. IBM is one of the few information technologycompanies with a continuous history dating back to the 19th century. IBM manufactures and sells computer hardware and software (with a focus on the latter), and offers infrastructure services, hosting services, and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.

What I learned?

We had a lots of learning in IBM. We went to their data center. The speaker taught us about the services and it includes the assistance in a variety of areas and in a complex, multiplatform environment, including Linux -- from design and planning, procurement, installation, integration and migration assistance to systems management, telephone consulting and on-site hardware and software maintenance. The six laboratories are the following: Algorithm and Complexity Lab, Computer Vision and Machine Intelligence Lab, Scientific Computing Lab, Computer Security Lab, Networking and Distributed Systems Lab and Web Science Lab.

What I liked ?

This day was our second day and it seems that we stayed for a long long time here in Manila because we had a very long day. We had many activities this day. It's an honor to go in UP Diliman. I really enjoyed. We really enjoyed. I liked the school. UP Diliman is a big school ever that I've seen.

What I didn’t like?

I didn’t liked that I was feeling so drowsy during the SeaChange tour, it was embarrassing. I was also freezing cold.

Day3

Today, I went to a company visit to ASTI or the Advanced Science and Technology Institute located inside UP Diliman campus in Quezon City in the morning and in the afternoon we went to SSS or the Social Security System of the Philippines also located at Quezon City in East Avenue.

ASTI Embedded Technologies is the result of an initial test bed of the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) to accommodate the increasing demand for dynamic software and embedded hardware designs for ASTI projects. Today, we have evolved as a significant arm in developing innovative solutions and providing services on embedded space.

Its mission is to seek to become the leader in research and development in the areas of embedded systems, wireless communication, and advanced networking technologies and applications by creating simple, cost-effective, and value service solutions for today's embedded challenges and taking responsibility with uplifting local enterprise by providing innovative solutions using ICT and electronics technology. We had speakers from different projects that the ASTI had made, namely the Embedded Systems, Bayanihan Linux OS and Tsunami Alarm.

SSS or the Social Security System (SSS) is an agency which is created to establish a social security protection to workers in the private sector, wage earners as well as self-employed persons. It is implemented in accordance with the Republic Act 1161, better known as Social Security Act of 1954.

Of all the companies, SSS gave us the warmest welcome compared to the previous we have visited. We had a lecture about their system that was almost like a seminar held in the Magsaysay hall, if I’m not mistaken, a large hall. We were also given pamphlets and snacks. After the lecture we had a tour on their building. Our first stop was at the SSS Museum and Library. The staff and the people there are very friendly. The next stop was at the SSS ID Card production Center. We really had a close encounter with the machines that they used. Our last stop with the tour on SSS was the building where they entertain SSS potential and existing members. They oriented us on the processes a member should follow to be accommodated for the services they needed.

What I learned?

I learned about their project that involves development of an Open Source based desktop solution called Byanihan Linux (BL) with the end goal of providing the best alternative desktop solutions to the Filipinos. About the typhoon warning device they discussed to us that the PAGASA Interactive Climate and Weather Information Network (PICWIN) project aims to modernize the communications network of PAGASA, expedite the delivery of weather advisory services to the concerned public officials as well as the general public, and provide a platform for Philippine meteorological researchers to develop and adapt various numerical models. In SSS, social security benefits includes sickness, disability, retirement, maternity, and death funeral. Those benefits mentioned were a big help in our lives. We are pretty lucky if we are a member of this system. Pension is a big help, really a big help. Like my grandfather, also my parents.

What I liked ?

I liked the Social Security System’s warm welcome to us. The place was comfortable. The hall is so big. The facilities especially some guards were very hospitable and some of them came from in Davao City. As we passed by in the corridor, we heard saying a visayan words, I can't remember what the guard told.

What I didn’t like?

I don't like the traffic which consumed our time.

Day 4

Today, I went to a company visit to Hitachi located at the Laguna IT Park in BiƱan, Laguna. Hitachi Global Storage Technologie was founded in 2003 as a result of the strategic combination of IBM's and Hitachi storage Technologies businesses. With storage being one of Hitachi's core businesses, substantial technology and financial resources have been committed to ensure a successful and profitable business. The company defines the standard for product and service excellence, with its world-class operations, extensive technical knowledge and comprehensive customer support infrastructure. With its substantial investments in research and development, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is positioned to inspire and lead evolution of storage component technologies in the spirit of its founders. The company's aim is to enable user to fully engage in the digital lifestyle by providing access to large amounts of storage capacity in formats suitable for the office, on the road and in the home. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is positioned to immediately advance the role of hard disk drives beyond traditional computing environments to consumer electronics and other emerging applications.

Another of the companies who gave us the warmest welcome was Hitachi GST. They were strict in observing cleanliness in their building because it would affect the production of their products. We wore sanitary shoes and even jackets. At first they showed us a little presentation on how they make those tiny data storage gadgets.

What I learned?

The company provides immediate online access to more than three million records including business articles, industry reports, company profiles and executive contacts pulled from business data resources maintained by The Gale Group, Inc. Hitachi provides solutions catering to diverse needs of its customers in Philippines. They market a wide range of products and services for various industry sectors like power generation systems, transmission and distribution systems, heavy industrial equipment, industrial components and equipment as well as elevators and escalators. Hitachi’s philosophy of inspiring the next has made us a world leader in a wide range of technologies to improve every aspect of life.

What I liked ?

I liked the Hitachi’s way of having us educated in our tour to their company . One who guide us in the laboratory told us that the employee's should do their job in a right manner, they should carefully clean the chips. After cleaning it, the wafer will send to other laboratory room to check one by one.

I love the view of Taal volcano in Tagaytay. I really enjoyed the day. I loved our roller coaster ride at the Enchanted Kingdom, it was so scary for me because its my first time but I really enjoyed it.

What I didn’t like?

I don’t like the switching of buses when we headed home.. the bus I changed into was so loud. I cant rest and it was all so crowded.

Day 5

Today, I went to a company visit to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). It is an agency created embracing the cities of Metropolitan Manila or the National Capital Region. It is constituted into a special development and administrative region subject to direct supervision of the President of the Philippines. The MMDA office is located at Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) corner Orense Street, Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati, Philippines. The MMDA performs planning, monitoring and coordinative functions, and in the process exercise regulatory and supervisory authority over the delivery of metro-wide services within Metro Manila without diminution of the autonomy of the local government units concerning purely local matters.

Trends & Technologies, Inc. is a leading Solutions Provider and Systems Integrator for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the Philippines.

Trends & Technologies, Inc. has evolved to one of the country’s premier Systems Integrator for markets such as Business Process Outsourcing, Financial Services, Manufacturing, Telecommunications Service Providers, Government, Health Care, Hospitality, and Education sectors. Today, TTI offers turnkey solutions from IP infrastructure implementation, voice, data, and multimedia convergence, to network security and education.

What I learned?

Telecoms Training Institute offers the best training programs in the telecommunications industry. The authorized person told us that radio dispatch or two-way radio communication systems still remains to be the fastest, most reliable, and most affordable means in mobile communications.

What I liked?

I liked the TV screens used by MMDA. And the services of MMDA like: Transport and Traffic Management – which includes the formulation, coordination and monitoring of policies, standards, programs and projects to rationalize the existing transport operations, infrastructure requirements, the use of thoroughfares; traffic engineering services and traffic education programs, including the institution of a single ticketing system. I hoped we can have that in Davao City. Actually we have that here but I want to use more technologies.

What I didn’t like?

I don't like visiting the Telecoms Training Institute. I don't know why, because I'm sleepy that time. The company didn't catch up my attention.

Appendix:

What can I recommend for the improvement of the Field Trip and Seminars Program?

- I recommend that students even from the second semester of their second year in Institute of Computing should be oriented about the program so that if the amount that is needed by each student will be well prepared by their parents, giving them more time.

- I also recommend that students should be given one free day where they could roam around on their own in Metro Manila or wherever the location of the fieldtrip is. They should also have a log book recording where they would go, the time they left and the contact number of the person they are with. This is based on what we have observed on the field trip because there was so little time when we are allowed to go other paces in Manila. We haven’t much felt that we are in Manila until our extension of our fieldtrip. I was one of the students who had our weekends in Luzon, and it was really different because we came to socialize more close to the people from Luzon not only our classmates and schoolmates.

My advice to those who will take their Field Trip and Seminars Program in the near future:

- Earlier as now, students who plan to enroll this subject, I encourage you to be good to your parents and prepare them for the huge amount that will be used for you to join the fieldtrip. Explain to your parents very well why you should join the FTS program.

- Students should be reminded that FTS is not just fun, they should also be physically prepared. As of what we experienced, we haven’t reserved our energy; we slept late that’s why on some of our company visits we were really feeling drowsy. It was embarrassing and our facilitators were not happy about that. So we should be attentive no matter what because you cannot have the knowledge gathered through the company visits if you’re in Davao. It is really an opportunity not to be wasted.
